This blog will be about a new video game I found that is used for the purpose of occupational therapy to regain function in the arm and hand. The name of the game is Recovery Rapids. I learned about Recovery Rapids by searching the Internet and was lucky enough to find that the game was in its development stages and they needed people to test it out in its pre-delivery form. So I went about changing my computer to meet the criteria to actually use the game. This was not very difficult. For the most part, all I needed was a new video card, a Kinect video camera sold by Microsoft, and an adapter so that I could use it with a PC. I happen to have a laptop, but the unit can also be used on a desktop.
This Game Is Described by www.GamesThatMoveYou.com as the following: “River Rapids is a river rapids adventure game that delivers high repetition mass practice of the weaker hand, arm and trunk. Body movements are captured by the Microsoft Kinect sensor to power a kayak downstream.” More information and a demo can be found at the Games That Move You website above. I recommend this game be used as close to the stroke occurrence as possible but as in my case I am showing improvement and I am 8 years out from my stroke! I hope this information is helpful to my readers and if you have additional questions feel free to email me or go to the website above.
Remember, never give up no matter where you are in your journey. There are new technologies and protocols coming along all the time.
I will try to discover as many of these as I can and pass on the information to you.
